NEW 1998 INTRIGUE
•••••sosialOARMV/Z-ZAZ:
Tourism Slumped
In 1997
Jerusalem (JTFS) — A total of
2,288,000 tourists visited Israel last
year, a drop of 3 percent compared to
1996, according to the Central Bureau
of Statistics and Tourism Ministry.
The decline, said Tourism Ministry
spokesperson Orly Doron, was actual-
ly less than had been predicted, espe-
cially given the terror attacks in Tel
Aviv's Apropo cafe in March in
Jerusalem's Mahaneh Yehuda market
inJuly and on the capital's Ben-
Yehuda pedestrian mall in September.
According to CBS, there had been
a decline in the number of incoming
tourists during the first half of 1996,
but this leveled off during the second
part of that year, and the number of
visitors remained stable through last
year.
