Biran Wants
Jets Contract
Jerusalem (JPFS) — Defense Ministry
Director-General Ilan Biran made a
strong case for including Israeli firms
as subcontractors in the next genera-
tion fighter jet the air force is to buy
from the United States.
C-='\
Speaking at the sixth annual
Industrial Cooperation Conference in
Tel Aviv, Biran said he wants to make
sure future aircraft deals include Israeli
firms.
The IAF is considering purchasing
20-40 F-15Is or 25-70 latest-block F-
16s for a total of about $2 billion as
part of its 10-year modernization plan.
Both Boeing, which produces the F-
15, and Lockheed Martin, maker of
the F-16, have been courting Israel
since late last year.
Mon Israel Oil
Signs With Texaco
Jerusalem (JPFS) — Alon Israel Oil
announced it had signed a deal with
oil-giant Texaco to market its products
in Israel. The two companies hope to
achieve a 25 percent share of the mar-
ket, managing director David
Weisman said.
A Texaco spokesman refused to dis-
close the deal's value. While the lubri-
cants are currently produced outside
Israel, it is possible this could change
in the future, he said.
The spokesman pointed out that
his company was looking to Israel as a
potential new market in a variety of
areas.
Job Seekers
Increased In 1997
(JPFS) — The number of people
actively seeking work in Israel
increased by 17.7 percent, or 23,053,
to 152,753 last year, according to
Employment Service statistics pub-
lished by the Labor and Social Affairs
Ministry.
