Want to really wow your little
birthday celebrant? Give Martha
Stalburg from an Affair to Remem-
ber a call. One of her all-time
favorite little-girl parties was cen-
tered around a Madame Butterfly
theme. "We decorated everything
with Japanese fans and butterflies
and everyone came with a kimono
on," Stalburg says.
Her West Bloomfield-based corn-
pany, named after the title of the
renowned movie, An Affair to
Remember, fashions most of her din-
ing and decor themes after movies or
stage productions, thus the Madame
Butterfly concept. For

As for food, think
plain and light. Pro-
fessional party throw-
er Joy Murray, who
owns Event Designs
in Huntington
Woods, says kids
adore fun fare. "You
can think about
nutrition, but also
think about fun when
planning your child's
party menu," says
Murray, whose hus-
band, Tom Murray, is
also in the food busi-
ness and co-owns
Pronto restaurant in
Royal Oak.
"The younger the
children, the less food
you should put out.
And sometimes it's
best to just offer cake
and ice cream," Mur-
ray says.
And of course,
food options often depend on where

One imaginative invitation reads:
"Wanted: Cowboys and Cowgirls for
a rootin' tootin' time."
Owner of the invitation shop for
some 22 years, Weisserman, her hus-
band and her daughter fulfill some
500 customer orders per year. Some
of those are do-it-yourself where the
customer buys creative paper
(imprintables) and then prints the
invitations on a home computer.
Rissa Winkelman, co-owner of
Giftpeople on Franklin Road in
ranklin, specializes in invitations as
well. "Our invitations complement
all kinds of party themes," says
