on
them to assist the British Red Cross
nurses until her "diamonds" were well
enough to travel to Holland and Swe-
den.
Luba Fredrick (her married name),
76, lives in North Miami Beach and is
in contact with many of her "chil-
dren." To commemorate the 50th
anniversary of liberation, Luba flew to
Amsterdam for an emotional reunion.
She was presented with a humanitari-
an medal.
"Luba is the same nurturing,
maternal woman today that she was
50 years ago," says producer, co-
director and co-writer Lisa Enos, a
Ludington, Mich., native and MSU
grad. "We went to her home to inter-
view her for the film and she made
cakes and cookies, really took us
under her wing."
Enos, 27, and her partner, Ken
Goldstein, 28, started Loxley Hall six
years ago in Chicago. Since that time,
they've opened an additional produc-
tion company in Portland, Ore., and
have produced 95 children's films,
including "There's No Such Thing As
A Chanukah Bush" seen last Decem-
ber on PBS.
Luba's story came to Enos' atten-
tion in 1994 when The Oregonian did
a follow-up to a "Dateline" segment
on Luba and her "children." She and
Goldstein were so intrigued with
Luba's story, they put together a five-
minute demo tape of their interview
with her and eventually received the
contract from A&E.
"As a young Jewish filmmaker, the
entire project was a moving experi-
ence," says Goldstein. "We traveled
through Europe, taped 43 hours of
interviews with the 'children' and dur-
ing editing, saw 40 hours of raw
footage from the camps.
"It was an emotional growth experi-
ence and I came away with a far
greater understanding of the Holo-
caust."
Goldstein credits the Simon
Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles and
its Moriah Films Project, for some of
the captivating original footage seen in
the documentary.
This edition of "Investigative
Reports," with host Bill Kurtis,
includes extensive interviews with
Luba, several of the rescued children
and Dr. Han Collis, a British Red
Cross nurse.
Says the self-effacing Luba of this
worldwide attention: "Any child I
would have done this for." El
