Women have been participating in Federation
for half a century — monetarily and with time.

iffy-two years ago, a handful
of Detroit Jewish women
got together to contribute
time, effort and dollars to
the community.
What was then established as the
Women's Division of the Jewish
Welfare Federation has grown to
become the Women's Campaign and
Education Department of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. It
now has 400 active women and 7,000
contributors who raise $5 million per
year for the annual Allied Jewish
Campaign.
Sandra Jaffa, director of the depart-
ment, said it operates today on values
established years ago.
"It goes back a long time that
women decided they needed to be a
part of this Jewish community and
contribute to it," she said.
There never was a "men's depart-
ment" per se. "But what happened
was, men began Federation," Jaffa
said. "It was a men's department, it
was a men's club, and 52 years ago the
women pulled their own piece togeth-
er so they could be a part of things
and counted."
Through the years, the depart-
ment's focus has changed to meet the
needs of its constituency.
"We don't do fashion shows ...
Women want to be involved in causes
that are serious. [But] the things we
do today are based on the same values
as 52 years ago."
The programs that have remained
constant, Jaffa said, include leadership
training and community education,
including programs like Rekindling
Shabbat luncheons and an upcoming
women's seder.
Edie Slotkin, president of the
department, says outreach is a big
component.
"Our purpose is to reach women
who really are not informed of the
Women's Department and the
Federation," said Slotkin. In particu-

.

lar, the Choices program — to which
people are invited personally by "table
hostesses" — has raised a substantial
amount of money while also pulling
in unaffiliated women.
This year's Choices program fea-
tured broadcaster Joan Lunden; more
than 1,000 women attended, each
contributing a minimum gift of $150
to the Campaign in addition to the
lunch cost of $25.
"We get increased giving this way,"
Slotkin said. "We get hundreds of new
women at this event every year." Last
year's guest was Joan Rivers, and
before that Henry Winkler, Judith
Viorst and actress Tova Feldshuh.
Women's Department also breaks
down by interest to attract even more
participants. Slotkin said the Business

deration is gearing
for its first
11- emale seder.
