and Professional Division appeals to
women who can't take a
chunk out of the workday
but want to participate. For
them, there is the Voices
program, which featured
Gloria Steinem at an
evening program in
December.
"The working world is
untapped," Slotkin
remarked. "There are so
many women back in the
work force; we have to
make our programming
available. All the young
women are working too, so
it's a win-win thing to
appeal to the working
women."
Participants range in age
from the 30s to the original
founders of the depart-
ment, now in their 80s.
"All you have to do is
make a pledge to the Allied
Jewish Campaign to be a
member of the Women's
Department," said Slotkin.
"We are almost 20 per-
cent of the overall Allied
Jewish Campaign in

Detroit — [that] gives us a real voice
in the communi-
ty," she added. ❑

the country to do these seders," said
Cheryl Guyer, chairperson of the
Federation event. She noted that
Baltimore, Cleveland and other cities
offer all-female seders as part of a
"national movement to touch women
spiritually."
Lisa Adelman, associate director of
the Women's Campaign and
Education Department, sees the
event as another way of reaching out
She explained that Federation is
holding its own seder in order to
appeal to women across the religious
spectrum.
For herself, Nelson said she is glad
there are multiple opportunities for
women to get together locally and
learn about Passover; last year, about
230 women attended Nelson's seder.
The Federation event is not a fem-
inist- seder, although it will include
new readings that focus on women at
/- the seder and the role of biblical
women.
"Had it not been for the women
during the Exodus, there may not
have been an exodus," Adelman said.
"We are looking at those issues as
opposed to it being a venue to pro-
mote one gender over another. It's

really to empower women and to
bring women together to look at the
seder in a differen.t way," she said.
Guyer agrees. "It's supposed to be
spiritually uplifting, an opportunity
for women to be educated and bring
things home to their family experi-
ence. Most women I've spoken with
don't have the luxury of sitting
through a seder — cutting chicken,
running around. Ours is very plural-
istic. We hope to reach out to
Reform, Conservative and Orthodox
women; this allows them to listen to
the true meaning of the seder."
Associate chairs for the event
include Dorothy Barak, Sharon
Gene, Margie Kmsnick and Arline
Gould. The Haggadah was created
by Aviva Silverman (Conservative),
Nancy Gad-Harf (Reform), Leah
Ann Kleinfeldt (modern Orthodox)
and cantorial soloist Penny Steyer
(Reform). ❑
