College Students
Scholarship Fund
Applications are now being accepted
from college students by the Harry and
Sarah Laker Israel Youth Scholarship
Fund for ari academic year's study in
Israel, the 50th Jubilee Anniversary
Year of Independence.
A $2,500 cash award will be given
to the winning student who can select
from the following outstanding univer-
sities for his or her study: Bar-Ilan,
Haifa, Tel Aviv, Ben-Gurion or
Hebrew University.
To qualify, the applicant must be a
resident of the Metropolitan Detroit
area, currently attending a college or
university in the United States and
must have applied to a school of high-
er learning in Israel.
Applications for the scholarship,
which is co-sponsored by the Harry
and Sarah Laker Israel Scholarship
Fund and Congregation Beth Achim,
are now available by calling (248) 352-
8670, or writing to the Laker Scholar-
ship Fund, 21100 W. 12 Mile Road,
Southfield, MI 48076.
The final day to apply is Thursday,
May 14.
Young Artists
Concert Set
Pianists Stacy Makhnevich and Sarah
Newman will be the guest artists at the
3 p.m. Sunday, March 8, Young Artists
concert sponsored by Temple Beth El.
They will perform several light clas-
sical compositions. Sarah also will play
several of her own works. The concert
is open to the community without
charge.

For Mission
Applications for Michigan Miracle
Mission III will be available April 1 for
Michigan residents college age and
older.
Slated for April 18-28, 1999, the
mission will begin in Tel Aviv, where
mission goers will land in time for the
country-wide celebration of Yom
Ha'atzma'ut, Independence Day.
Young adults—single and
married—will have an opportunity to
have their own bus with an itinerary
geared to their interests.
In addition to round-trip airfare,
the trip includes accommodations at
five-star hotels, most dinners and
lunches and Israeli breakfasts, taxes
and transfers, sightseeing in air-condi-
tioned buses with Israeli tour guides
and entertainment by Israeli perform-
ers.
Price for the trip is $2,995 per per-
son, double occupancy, with a $100
discount if paid in full by Oct. 15.
Single room supplement is $865.
Flights will be direct from Detroit to
Israel via El Al.

Young Parents
Cooking Lesson
Young parents will get a Shabbat cook-
ing lesson 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19,
at a Rekindling Shabbat gathering in a
private home.
The program is hosted by Family
Matters of the Community Outreach
and Education Department of the Jew-
ish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Chefs Charles Keeps and Michael
Kessler will demonstrate the fine art of
creating healthy and delicious Shabbat
meals. Keeps and Kessler form the
team of Savoir Fare Catering.
Participants will enjoy hors d'oeu-
vres and samples.

Joint Dinner
A joint dinner meeting between the
Italian American Bar Association of
Michigan and the B'nai B'rith Barris-
ters will be held 6:15 p.m. Wednesday,
March 25, at Andiamo Italia West
restaurant, 6676 Telegraph Road,
south of Maple.
Rabbi Daniel Schwartz from Tem-
ple Shir Shalom will be speaking at the
joint meeting on the topic of "Ethics
of the Fathers," in which the ancient
teachers provide ethical guidance to
lawyers.
The cost of dinner is $32. Checks

Volunteers For
Pet-A-Pet
Pet-A-Pet is an animal visitation pro-
gram with volunteers with pets who
visit nursing homes, hospital rehabilita-
tion programs, hospices, and children
who are abused or developmentally dis-
abled.
To join Pet-A-Pet, call Ruth Curry,

(248) 464-8944. No special training is
necessary for pets or volunteers; how-
ever, pets should be friendly and must
have current vaccination records.
Pet-A-Pet visits are scheduled once a
month and last approximately one hour.
Beth El Hosts
Night In Italy
Temple Beth El will present "A Night in
Italy" 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at
the temple. The evening, hosted by the
Temple's Rabbi David Castiglione, will
feature Italian food, wine and song.
Entertaining that evening will be
Cantor Stephen Dubov and friends,
Elsie Inselman, Curtis Peters, Marsha
Rofel and Daniel Singer, in a program
that features arias, art songs and some
Yiddishe Neopolitan favorites. Cost of
the evening is $27 per person.

For March
The JARC Children and Family Divi-
sion, incorporating the Keshet Family
Support Program, will host four events
