Vir omen's hockey hasn't
always gotten the respect
it deserved, even in
hockey-mad Canada.
_
But the U.S. women's gold medal per-
formance at the Winter Olympics in
Nagano helped spur a worldwide atti-
tude adjustment.
Indeed, when people discover that
Cranbrook-Kingswood senior Logan
Jacobson-Weiss skates for the school's
girl's hockey team, they are "very
impressed. They think that girls who
play hockey are really brave," said
Jacobson-Weiss.
When Andover sophomore Bene
Lederer tells people she plays hockey,
((at first they're shocked, but they
think it's a cool thing. It's different to
them, but they don't see anything
wrong with it.
"There's a lot of opportunities right
now ... And I think that you have a
team bond that you would have in no
other sport."
Lederer was inspired by the film
The Mighty Ducks. "I just walked out
of the movie with such an exciting
feeling. As soon as I walked out of
there, I said, 'I want to play hockey. –
Women's hockey follows men's
rules, except no bodychecking is

allowed.
Andover and Lahser joined the girls
high school hockey ranks this year,
forming a unified team — the Bloom-
field Hills Knighthawks. Cranbrook-
Kingswood's program is in its fifth
season. Both teams play in the five-
team Michigan Metro Women's Hock-
ey League.
Cranbrook-Kingswood (C-K) is 7-
5-2 overall, 6-4-2 in league action. C-
K features seven Jewish players. Jacob-
son-Weiss leads the team with 17
goals and 8 assists for 25 points, even
though her season ended recently
when she broke her collarbone while
snowboarding.
"She really understands the game,"
says C-K Coach Lance Wissmueller.
"She knows where to be when she
doesn't have the puck. She knows
where to put it when she does. For the
most part it's what's upstairs that
makes her the performer that she is.
"She's got a good shot, good atti-
tude, good hockey sense. With just a
little bit more effort she could go on
to play at college."
Jacobson-Weiss, the team's captain,
began playing organized hockey as a
freshman, but says she's still learning
the game.
"At the beginning of this season I
was kind of a puck hog, but now I
pass. I think I'm starting to figure out
the ice better and know where people
are going to be and where I can rely
on people, and positioning and stuff
like that."
Jacobson-Weiss says she "definitely,
