League of Their Own Girl's hockey is on the rise at area high schools. MIKE ROSENBAUM Special to The Jewish News /- \Th /- /- Vir omen's hockey hasn't always gotten the respect it deserved, even in hockey-mad Canada. _ But the U.S. women's gold medal per- formance at the Winter Olympics in Nagano helped spur a worldwide atti- tude adjustment. Indeed, when people discover that Cranbrook-Kingswood senior Logan Jacobson-Weiss skates for the school's girl's hockey team, they are "very impressed. They think that girls who play hockey are really brave," said Jacobson-Weiss. When Andover sophomore Bene Lederer tells people she plays hockey, ((at first they're shocked, but they think it's a cool thing. It's different to them, but they don't see anything wrong with it. "There's a lot of opportunities right now ... And I think that you have a team bond that you would have in no other sport." Lederer was inspired by the film The Mighty Ducks. "She really understands the game," says C-K Coach Lance Wissmueller. "She knows where to be when she doesn't have the puck. She knows where to put it when she does. For the most part it's what's upstairs that makes her the performer that she is. "She's got a good shot, good atti- tude, good hockey sense. With just a little bit more effort she could go on to play at college." Jacobson-Weiss, the team's captain, began playing organized hockey as a freshman, but says she's still learning the game. "At the beginning of this season I was kind of a puck hog, but now I pass. I think I'm starting to figure out the ice better and know where people are going to be and where I can rely on people, and positioning and stuff like that."
