Jilts Miss Universe

Jerusalem (JPFS) —Miss Universe
will not be visiting Eilat this spring,
after the Tourism Ministry backed
a-rmn-liq, to help underwrite
the contest there.
Eilat Mayor Gabi Kadosh said he
was shocked by the ministry's deci-
sion not to provide what he said was
a promised $2 million, of which
$100,000 have already been provided
in escrow.
At a time when tourism is low, the
event would have provided a flood of
visitors for the contest itself, as well
as world TV coverage, he said.
Kadosh, who fears he may be held
personally responsible to the Miss
Universe Corporation for the $2 mil-
lion, said the municipality would
petition the High Court of Justice to
get the funds.

To Be Restored?

Moscow (JTA) — A Russian ultrana-
tionalist legislator called for the
restoration of the Pale of Settlement.
Retired Gen. Albert Makashov,
known for his anti-Semitic remarks,
made the statement about the swath
of land where Jews were required to
live in late-czarist Russia at a session
of the State Duma, Russia's lower
house of parliament.

Washington (JTA) — U.S. Sen.
Alfonse D'Amato, R-N.Y.,
announced plans to introduce legisla-
tion calling on museums around the
world to return to their rightful
owners artworks that were looted by
the Nazis.
Describing it as a "very compre-
hensive" bill, the chairman of the
Senate Banking Committee said it
"will have international ramifica-
tions."
