Herstik hopes to earn as much as
$2,000 a session from the agency. "I
make modest commercials," he
insists. "A little funny, a little nice,
but no swimsuits. I don't sing prayers
that mention the name of God. I
wouldn't want to take His name in
vain. I wouldn't sing Kol Nidrei or
other songs which are associated with
repentance or solemn occasions."
One of the three "machers,"
Joshua Jacobovits, used to teach in a
Jerusalem yeshiva. He was born in
Israel 37 years ago, but raised in
New York, where -he earned degrees
in psychology and Jewish history. He
is married with three children. "First
and foremost," he admits, "I'm mod-
elling to supplement my income."

"I make modest
commercials. A
little funny, a
little nice, but no
swimsuits."
— Chazzan Nathan Herstik
His rate for a day's shoot is
$1,000. His greatest hit was a super-
market ad in which his trim ginger
beard was smeared in chocolate pud-
ding. "My rabbi told me as long as I
pose in a modest manner it's permis-
sible," he says. "He drew the line at
taking off my clothes, advertising
non-kosher products or posing
together with women. It's OK for me
to go around in shorts or with my
shirt collar unbuttoned."
So far, Ben-Naeh has not pho-
tographed religious women, though
he has a list of candidates. He's been
quietly canvassing sacred sentiment.
This month, Dov Lior, an eminent
rabbinical jurist, gave his seal of
approval: Women may appear in
stills and TV commercials, even in
fashion shows.
Supermodel Naomi Campbell
needn't lose any sleep, though. The
religious competition will parade in
ankle-length skirts, high necks and
show no elbows. And each shot, Ben-
Naeh promises, will be reviewed by a
rebbetzin, a rabbi's wife. 111
