Jerusalem (JPFS) — National
Semiconductor will develop its first
single-chip PC product at its facility
in Herzliya, as part of the company's
strategic aim to compete in the infor-
mation appliance and low-cost corn-
puter market, company CEO and
president Brian Halla announced.
The company, which has 200
employees in Israel, is to move to new
premises in May and expects to hire
another 70 engineers.
The product, dubbed "a system on
a chip," is to be ready by June 1999,
said Halla, 51. Since taking the helm
in 1996, he has engineered a shakeup
of the company from focusing on pro-
duction of low-cost chips to complete
product function in order to keep up
with the "consumerization of the PC."
He predicted that the price of low-
cost PCs on the U.S. market, which
"blindsided IBM and Intel," will go
down to $500 by this summer com-
pared with $800 today and $1,000
last summer.
These PCs are not low perfor-
mance, but are just made at lower
cost, he said.

Deep-Sea Drilling
Jerusalem (JPFS) — The waters off
the coast, particularly in the Ashdod
area, are likely to yield large quantities
of oil, according to surveys by several
companies, including Avner Oil and
Gas and Isramco, their representatives
told the Knesset Economics
Committee.
Israel has potential oil supply total-
inc, 5 billion — 5.5 billion barrels,
including 2.1 billion-2.7 billion off-
shore, said Yehezkel Druckman, head
of the National Infrastructure
Ministry's oil department.
Avner joint managing director
David Cohen said the firm intends
carrying out exploratory offshore
drilling to depth of 5,000 meters dur-
ing the second half of the year.
