high in salt and cholesterol ... Patrick
is doing a healthier version of this
favorite of so many people ... Yet
retaining the same good soul food
flavor.
Some customers get mad because it
isn't open on Mondays ... They wish
Beans & Cornbread would never
close.
It is open Tuesday-Friday, 11 to 3
for lunch ... Dinner is Tuesday-Thurs-
day, 5 to 9; Saturday, 5 to 10; Sunday,
4 to 9.
More than 1,500 people a week are
served at Beans & Cornbread ...
Remember, this is only a little 64-
seater.
The open kitchen reveals a look of
sanitation and cleanliness ... All pantry
people, including salad folks, wear
rubber gloves.
The restaurant has white linen
tablecloths, purple linen napkins (pur-
ple is the favorite color of Patrick's
mom, Yvonne Coleman) and green
linen napkins ... Tile is around the
restaurant interior with purple top and
green bottom ... A huge mural above
the open kitchen depicts a jazzy, hap-
pening restaurant.
Never in his wildest dreams did
Patrick even remotely think that his
Beans & Cornbread would be the
over-capacity restaurant that it is.
This is what good food, good ser-
vice and good music will do ... And
particularly when the food is not only
good but deliciously different too.
Beans & Cornbread is quite an
experience in dining ... So much so
that it has raised a lot of eyebrows in
the bordering-on-sensational ring.
BEING NATIONAL co-champi-
ons of college football also means a lot
of eating and gala festivities.
Now considered one of the unoffi-
cial meeting places for local champi-
onship athletic teams, Big Daddy's
Parthenon on Orchard Lake Road
went all-out recently for another victo-
ry celebration dinner by the University
of Michigan Wolverines.
This time it was for coaches, assis-
tants, coordinators, secretaries and
wives, with red roses on the Big
Daddy's banquet room tables as food
kept coming and coming, and balloon
footballs floated above.
Lots of Opa! yelling as loaded trays
burst majestically into bonfire splen-
dor when saganaki cheese flamed
galore to the delight of attendees.
Football wasn't the only topic of the
evening ... At our table, Judy and
Richard Colton, who eat out almost
nightly, and Sharon and Dr. Ron
