Up With
Calcium

New guidelines increase the recom-
mended calcium intake to at least
1,000 milligrams a day for adult
Americans. Established by the Food
and Nutrition Board of the National
cademy of Sciences, the new guide-
lines are an expanded version of the
Recommended Dietary Allowances
(RDAs).
Also according to the revised guide-
lines, children and teens ages 9 to 18
and adults over 50 need even more
than 1,000 milligrams a day (children
and teens need 1,300 and the over-50
crowd needs 1,200 milligrams).
Most Americans don't even meet
the old RDAs, the group says.
Increasing intake of milk, yogurt,
cheese — even ice cream — will help
get you there. A cup of milk or yogurt
(the lowest-fat alternative) yields about
300 milligrams of calcium, says Jean
Ragalie, R.D., vice president of nutri-
tion and health communications for
the National Dairy Council. (CNS)

Low
Priority

A recent MasterCard survey of 1,000
adults found that Americans spend
more time deciding on vacation plans
than choosing a doctor. The survey
evealed that while 42 percent of
Americans spend "weeks" or more
choosing a new car or vacation desti-
nation, only 22 percent spend this
much time deciding on a doctor.

ant to lose weight? Don't crash diet
or expect to drop pounds quickly —
you've got to change your lifestyle and
set realistic goals.
Some tips from Vegetarian Times:
• Give up on preconceived notions of
perfection.
• Examine your body type. Then
develop an exercise program to fit
our needs.
• Alter your diet to include low-fat
and low-calorie foods.
• Set realistic, long-term weight-loss
goals.
• Reward yourself with favorite foods
occasionally. That way eating doesn't
become a chore.
