Established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National cademy of Sciences, the new guide- lines are an expanded version of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs). Also according to the revised guide- lines, children and teens ages 9 to 18 and adults over 50 need even more than 1,000 milligrams a day (children and teens need 1,300 and the over-50 crowd needs 1,200 milligrams). Most Americans don't even meet the old RDAs, the group says. Increasing intake of milk, yogurt, cheese — even ice cream — will help get you there. A cup of milk or yogurt (the lowest-fat alternative) yields about 300 milligrams of calcium, says Jean Ragalie, R.D., vice president of nutri- tion and health communications for the National Dairy Council.
