Markus Rothbart, chairman of
Cattleman's Meat Company, and son
David S. Rothbart, president, donat-
ed $26,000 to Gleaners Community
Food Bank, which will provide more
than 30,000 meals to the hungry of
southeastern Michigan.
The donation allows Gleaners
Community Food Bank to replenish
food inventory depleted by holiday
food drives. "The Rothbart's dona-
tion is timely for Gleaners," says co-
founder, Gene Gonya. Gleaners dis-
tributed 10,000 turkeys during the
holidays for a total of 120,000
pounds of food. Gleaners, a member
of Second Harvest, found it took an
average of 14 percent more food to
feed the hungry this November than
last.
Gleaners Community Food Bank
is the largest in Michigan and dis-
tributes 15 million pounds of food
annually to the hungry of southeast
Michigan. More than 300,000 nutri-
tious meals are provided each week
to the working poor, sheltered
women and children, seniors and the
disabled within Gleaners' five county
service area.

Gary Torgow was appointed by
Governor Engler to the Civil Rights
Commission,
which develops
and administers
policies for the
Department of
Civil Rights for
the state of
Michigan.
Torgow, of Oak
Park, is the CEO
of the Sterling
Gary Torgow

Group, a Detroit-based real estate
development, investment and man-
agement company. He is also a
founding partner of the law firm
Swanson, Torgow, Lyons and
Halpern, P.C. Torgow serves on the
Board of Directors of the Detroit
Downtown Development Authority.

Evan Hirschelman, son of Lynne
and Mike
Hirschelman,
recently received
a first place
award in the
Schaefer Classical
Guitar
Competition at
the University of
Arizona. He also
received a grant

Richard A. Loewenstein has been
named president-elect of Gleaners
Community Food Bank.
Loewenstein, a fourth generation
family member of 103-year-old

retail and food service experience to
forge new relationships with food
chains and distributors.

Karen R. Jacobson has been appoint-_

of principal at

Middle School in

is the chairperson Karen R. Jacobson

12 Health Study
Committee.

Rachel Cohen, Akiva Day School
fifth-grade student, will have one of
her works published. The Michigan
Reading Association selected her
family folktale to be included in its
annual Kaleidoscope publication.
Rachel will attend a Young Author's
Luncheon at the MRA's annual con-
ference in March in Grand Rapids.
