Israel Study
Worthwhile

I am writing to second Irwin Shaw's
comments ("Jewish Programs And
Identity" Jan. 23) regarding the cur-
rent and past programs to bring
Jewish youth to Israel.
My brother and I were partici-
pants in the summer Hebrew pro-
gram and subsequent eight-week trip
to Israel in the early 1970s. We had a
chance to live, study and explore the
country in a most intimate way. We
were matched with a group of Israelis
and were proficient enough in
Hebrew to get along reasonably well.
We stayed in their homes on
weekends and went on day trips in
the afternoons. Mornings consisted
of classes in language, culture and
history.
Almost 30 years later, we both feel
that our trips made our connection
to the Jewish people and the State of
Israel much more meaningful and
tangible.
