In Gaza, they are taught to revere sui-

buses and cafes.
On Israeli TV, entertainers for years
have sung wistful songs about peace.
On Palestinian TV, the pop songs are
about the coming conquest of Jaffa
and the Galilee.

Vehicles
Are Killers
How ironic that the same issue of
The Detroit Jewish News which con-
tained the death notice of our dear
son-in-law, Jonathan Kaplan, also
carried an article devoted to motor
vehicles ("Drivers' Dread" Jan. 9),
with a prominent discussion of utili-
ty vehicles.
Although these sport utility vehi-
cles are now referred to as "SUVs,"
to us they are killing machines. The
life of our daughter Mimi's husband
was destroyed, when, while he was
driving home from buying bagels, he
was hit on the driver's side by a Jeep
Grand Cherokee. The ongoing inves-
tigation points to a young woman in
a hurry as the cause of this tragic
accident; but what we know with
certainty is that Jonathan, in a car,
could not survive being hit by a
vehicle which weighs close to three
tons and sits much higher than a car.
The National Highway Traffic
Safety Adminikration is about to
release a new study on side-impact
collisions. When a sport utility vehi-
cle hits a car on the driver's side, the
'car's driver is 30 times as likely to die
as the driver of the sport utility vehi-
cle. By comparison, when a car hits
another car, the driver of the struck
car is only 6.6 times as likely to die
as the driver of the striking car.
Although SUVs still account for
only a third of the family vehicles on
the road, they were the striking vehi-
cle on the majority of side-impact
deaths in two-vehicle collisions in
1994 through 1996. Road deaths for
1997 have not been released yet.
While these statistics are com-
pelling, they pale in comparison to
the life of one modest, brilliant, 36-
