How Is This Seder
Different From
Bill Other Seders?
• 'which only requires 4 minutes
microwaving. Even our supposed
top taste-bud tickler and the source
of a thousand cliches about British
life — I'm talking about fish and
chips, of course — is under threat.
This is even less painless than the
aforementioned convenience foods
• for the simple reason that absolutely
no preparation is involved. Just wait
for your calorific fish fried in batter
to be wrapped up in yesterday's
newspapers, alongside a portion of
soggy chips (English chips have to
be soggy), while deciding whether
\- you wish to pour on salt and vine-
gar, and sometimes the fish-and-chip
man will even do that for you.
These days, for every chippie (fish-
and-chip shop), you'll find 10
McDonalds or Burger Kings (no
soggy chips allowed here) and 20
curry houses. Curry is the both-ends-
• burning dish from the Indian subcon-
tinent which has become the most
favorite take-away food in the UK,
and which some unkindly ascribe as
the chief reason for the dispropor-
tionate rise in the number of British
cats that have disappeared in the
past few years.
Indeed, our tastes could be chang-
ing in more ways than one.
Finally, I shall end by looking at
beverages, or more specifically one

tea drinkers, coffee has come a
long way in recent years. It used to
be said you couldn't get a decent
cup of coffee in Britain, and except
for a few select places this was
true. What passed for coffee was a
mug of liquid which tasted like dish-
water with froth on top. But now
you can get filter, cappuccino,
decaf, latte, and a host of others
whose names I've never bothered
learning, and you can sit in one of
these cafes, which all have French
or Spanish names, naturally, and
think how sophisticated you are. A
couple of years back, in a town
called Littlehampton on the south
coast, I found a cafe which served
