HELP ISRAEL!
• In 1974, the PLO developed the "Strategy of Phases" to ensure the
complete destruction of Israel.
• Now, in 1998, Arafat declares that his view has not changed!
"The Oslo Accords are just one more phase in the PLO's 1974 ongoing
"Strategy of Phases' for the destruction of Israel".
• Zionist Organization of America President, Morton A. Klein said,
"Arafat's continual reiteration of the 'Strategy of Phases' encourages
Palestinian Arabs to seek Israel's destruction, constant violence, and
murder of Jews.

j
our existence is largely due to techno-
logical changes in the world, which
enable us to compete with companies
1,000 times bigger than we are.
"Now you can be a publishing com-
pany and all you need is a computer.
You don't need typesetters and full-time
graphic artists and full-time editors. All
you need is a computer, and you can
contract out the pfinting so you don't
need to own printing presses.
"Add that up with a fax machine and
a Web site, and no one knows that
you're small."
For years, bookstore buyers would
call to order books, not knowing they
were ringing a single phone line in an
Ann Arbor apartment. They would
leave detailed messages with the book's
ISBN number and spell out the title
when, Smith says, 'All they had to say
was, 'Send me seven of your books."'
The company has a Web site —
vvvvw.alertandonline.com — and a toll-
free number (888-ALERT-44), through
which people can order books and
apply to be sales representatives at dif-
ferent schools.
And because the three don't rely on
book sales to put food on their tables,
Faubel, Smith and Topf can take risks
that others may not.
"We can engage in business transac-
tions without feeling nervous and at the
same time have really high standards
because we don't need to be doing this,"
Smith says. "If we really like a project,
we go after it. If not ..."
They receive manuscripts all the time
now "Almost every week someone
approaches us with an idea," he adds.
Of course, from day one their busi-
ness has been a success. "We've never
run a deficit," says Topf. "The only
time we had a deficit was when I went
to the printer for the first time with a
check for $1,000 for 200 books. Since
then we've always been in the black."
Each of the partners takes a small
salary, but mostly they own equity and
get dividends from the company.
This part-time way of starting a busi-
ness is safe, says Topf. He agrees that "in
some ways we've been willing to take
larger risks, 'so what if it doesn't work,'
we're all pretty successful on our own
without this. It's taken a lot of the pres-
sure off, makes it much more laid-back.
"We've had some problems where
books have been late to ship, but is it
really that big a deal? You go to work
and have patients on ventilators,
dying or sick babies, and you think,
'People can wait for the microbiology
study guide.' It puts things into per-
spective."
