Christ-killer," he says. "Maybe I'm
repressing some of those harsh experi-
ences. Maybe that's why I do have the
feeling of being an outsider."
In his heart, he harbors fond feel-
ings for his Jewish heritage.
"I was raised by my mother," says
Morris, whose father died when the
filmmaker-to-be was only 2.
"She was an extraordinary person.
Yiddish was her first language. Later,
she wound up working on her doctor-
ate at Columbia," he says of
Cinnabelle Morris ("Cinnabelle" is the
He is also interested in unraveling
the threads of the Jeffrey McDonald
story, re-examining the issues that led
to the murder conviction of the physi-
cian/Vietnam hero accused of killing
his wife and family.
Although the story already has been
the focus of a book and a television
mini-series, Morris would like to turn
his camera on the material.

"Both the movie and the book
made [the case] seem completely dif-
ferent" from what it was, he says.
And then there is one of his long-
cherished projects, The Trial of King
Boots, a true story about a sheep
dog in Michigan put on trial for
murder. The dog was defended by
local attorney Rick Selik.
In any case, Morris proves any-
thing but fast, cheap and out of
control in his steady, long-term
commitment to the expensive and
focused art of documentary film
making.
Maybe that's why he doesn't
hedge on whose story he likes best
in his latest film.
"Out of the four men in the
film, I like the gardener best,"
muses Morris. "There is some-
thing that I can so easily identify
with, making these things so clear-
ly absurd, painstaking, evanes-
cent."

That pride in being Jewish is some-
thing he would like to project in a
future film.
"The Holocaust is a topic I'd like to
deal with," says the filmmaker. "I have
always been fascinated by the topic of
murder. I wonder if it comes out of all
that," he said, referring to his under-
standing of the Holocaust.
Morris detects an incredible story
in "that whole period of Europe, from
1939 to 1945. It provides one of the
great detective stories."
After all, the topiary gardener's tal-
ent is like a leaf out of his own career.
"There is something wonderful
about it — crazy and futile — but
wonderful," says the movie maker. El
