Temple Singles
Temple Israel's Singles Extension
Group will host Jewish singles 50 and
over at "It's Picnic Time - 1998," 6:30
p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the temple.
Dinner will feature kosher hot dogs,
salads, beverages and dessert. Dancing
will be to Wally Duda's music.
Members are $13; non-members,

The application deadline for the
American Arabic and Jewish Friends
Scholarship competition is Monday,
Jan. 22.
Detroit-area high school students in
the 11th or 12th grades who are of
Arabic or Jewish descent are eligible to
participate. Students must attend a 4
p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 meeting at
Southfield-Lathrup High School where
they will be paired with other students
to work on the scholarship competi-:
tion.
The students will work together on
their scholarship essays, "The Ties
That Bind," on how their cultures are
more similar than different. The short,
completed essays will be due April 8.
Last year, 10 scholarships were award-
ed ranging from $1,000 to $250.
The American Arabic Jewish
Friends group is affiliated with the
Detroit Interfaith Roundtable.

A kindergarten informational breakfast
will be held 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan.
21, at Temple Emanu-El Nursery
School in Oak Park to introduce
prospective parents to the 1998-1999
academic kindergarten prOgram.
Both half-day and full-day options
are available. Teachers will be on hand
to explain curriculum goals and mate-
rials, focusing on science, art, cooking,
computer and drama.
Everyone in the community with
children who will be kindergarten age
in September is invited to attend.
Extended care is available both before
and after class.
Enrollment materials for all 1998-
1999 nursery school and day camp
programs will be available by Feb. 1.
Both the nursery and the camp are
open to children age 2-6 years. Camp
programming options for 4-to 6-year-
olds will include Safety Town, twice-
weekly pool swimming and bussed
field trips, in addition to on-sight art,
water, sports and theme activities.
Activities for the younger children
will center on specialists brought to the
temple campus for enrichment pro-
gramming.

Havdalah
At The IPM
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit, Jimmy Prentis
Morris Building and Jewish
Experiences for Families will host a
Havdalah happening 2 p.m. Sunday,
Feb. 8, at JPM.
The program will begin with a
Havdalah service lead by Beth
Greenapple, the Judaic enrichment
coordinator for the Jewish Community
Center, and Shelly Littman, dance
midrashist. This program will feature
the "Star Lab," a portable planetarium,
which will present information on the
current night sky (transitional sky), the
stars, the planets and constellations.
Finally, the whole family will partici-
pate in Havdalah art projects.

Yad Ezra, Michigan's only kosher food
pantry, recently held elections for its 14
officers and board of directors. Elected
to the executive committee for 1998
were the following: Jeffrey Appel, pres-
