Hebrew Class
At B'nai Moshe
Congregation B'nai Moshe will
launch a new eight-part crash course
in total beginner Hebrew reading,
taught by Education Director Rita
Abramson. The class is designed for
—2sJults with absolutely no Hebrew
skills.
The class will meet 8-9 p.m.
Monday nights; beginning Jan. 12.
Tuition is $40 for members of B'nai
Moshe; $56 for others. This class is
open to the community.
At the end of the series, students
who wish to continue with Hebrew
reading may apply to enter one of a
,-_-_Iumber of ongoing, higher-level class-
es offered at the synagogue. For infor-
mation about tuition fees and prereq-
uisites for higher-level classes, or to

Women Host

Jewish Federation Women's Campaign
and Education Department will have
a Rekindling Shabbat lunch and learn
session, noon Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the
Max M. Fisher Federation Building.
Guest speaker Dr. Sylvia Barack
Fishman will speak on "Shabbat: A
Light Throughout the Life Cycle."
Dr. Fishman is assistant professor of
contemporary Jewish life and sociolo-
gy of American Jews at Brandeis
University, associate director of the
International Research Institute of
Jewish Women at Brandeis and the
author of two books.
A kosher luncheon will be served,
and there is a $10 charge. Reservation
deadline is Jan. 20.

Menorah Lit
For New Americans
As an expression of the religious free-
dom gained by Detroit's new
Americans from Soviet Russia, there
will-be a public menorah lighting cer-
emony 7:30 p.m., Dec. 27 at New
Orleans Mall (10 Mile Road, corner
of Greenfield) in Oak Park. The pro-
gram is being arranged by Friends of
Refugees of Eastern Europe, a nation-
al organization devoted to assisting
Russian immigrant families in redis-
covering their Jewish heritage.
The program will begin with the
kindling of a large six-foot menorah.
Participants will hear the message of
Chanukah both in Russian and
English. There will be live music as
well as dancing, and the children of
Chaim Hebrew School will entertain
with Chanukah songs. All children
will receive Chanukah gift-paks and
traditional doughnuts will be available
for all. The public is invited at no
charge.

Essay Contest
To focus attention on Israel's 50th
anniversary, the American Jewish
Committee, in cooperation with
Hillel Foundations, will sponsor a col-
lege essay contest on "What Israel
Means To Me."
The contest is open to all under-
graduates currently enrolled full-time
at accredited institutions of higher
