from "the Good Ship Lollypop" ...
Downstairs a room was called "Her-
bie's," a disco which also offered food
on the light side.
Mexican Village, on Bagley and
18th, was one big happy melting pot
of humanity ... What you didn't find
was the cottage cheese/tomato/lean
hamburger crowd The people who
visited Mexican Village came to eat,
and the platters of food were large and
good.
The Saber Lancer on East Warren
began as the best neighborhood ham-
burger spot on the east side ... and
spread its wings ... The long, narrow
paneled room boasted a long bar
backed by a vivid expanse of stained
glass, and walls decorated with hand-
some showcases that exhibited the
uniforms, helmets and ... yes, sabers of
the Saber Lancers.
The Rotunda was Dearborn Hyatt
Regency Hotel's revolving restaurant
and cocktail lounge atop its 17 stories
... Diners were treated to an ever
changing view of Dearborn and Met-
ropolitan Detroit since the two-tiered
turntable made a complete revolution
every hour ... The indoor garden of
tall ficus trees and lush hanging green-
ery was in the midst of a vibrant art-
nouveau decor setting.
Mayfield Chop House, Griswold
near Grand River, was a small down-
town favorite, but the food and drinks
were honest and good, highly appreci-
ated and still remembered ... All soups
were home-made and you could get
prime ribs of beef every day except
Monday ... The fillet of fresh Nova
Scotia*salmon, fillet of pickerel,
broiled whitefish, sauteed sliced veal
with mushrooms and wine sauce, fillet
of flounder stuffed with crab meat and
many other dishes drew raves ...
Owner Joe Luft used to say, "We'd
rather run out of food than freeze it,"
and nothing was out of a can ... Din-
ners came with choice of appetizer ...
chopped liver, tomato juice, marinated
herring, shrimp cocktail, large salad
bowl with selection of about seven
dressings (I loved its chef's with
anchovies and Roquefort cheese), cot-
tage cheese or cole slaw, soup of the
day and bread basket.
VINO PICKS ... by Roger Petri,
Mac & Ray's general manager ...
Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon 1994
(Knights Valley) ... This Sonoma-
based cabernet is ripe with delicious
plums, black cherries and currants,
delightfully spicy, yet firmly tannic
and will drink well into 2002. A
great buy at about $20. ❑
