f singer/actor Mandy Patinkin
did not lose recipes easily, his
mother never would have writ-
ten a cookbook.
Every time a Jewish holiday came
up, the versatile entertainer would call
his mom to get favorite recipes he
remembered. Although she'd provided
the same ones the previous year, her
son misplaced them.

The computer arrived; Rubin
learned how it worked, and, after two
years, the public is being served
Grandma Doralee Patinkin's Jewish
Family Cookbook.
Chopped herring, blintzes, carrot
tzimmes, gefilte fish, kichel, knaid-
lach, kugel — all the Jewish favorites
— are there along with favorites from
other ethnic kitchens, somehow
stirred up with a Jewish spoon —
Cantonese fried rice, spinach lasagna,
taco salad.
The author has not forgotten
dieters and gives suggestions
for health-conscious cooks.
\ Ever the mother and
grandmother, she starts
out with lots of

tion and tips from
measurements to
cleanup.
Energized by
the publication,
the
singer/actor's
mother has
stepped out of
her behind-the-
scenes life for a
book-signing and(
public appearance
tour that included
a segment with
, David Letterman.

"It's very exciting to
be on TV and have inter-
views, and I'm amazed how
I'm able to take it in my
stride," Rubin said. "People have
been most gracious. Wherever I've
been, the reception has been absolute-
ly marvelous, and they put me at ease
immediately."
Although she has not kept up the
traditional kosher home, she has kept
up with recipes passed down over gen-
erations.

Mandy
Patinkin
and his
mother, Doralee
Patinkin Rubin, love to
hang out in a Jewish kitchen.
"Finally, Mandy said, 'This is ridicu-
lous; I'm going to send you a comput-
er, and you're going to learn how to
work it and then write a cookbook,"'
Doralee Patinkin Rubin recalled.
