up to Gold Hill on a fresh powder
morning, or families cruising the
groomed runs. It's also in the most
beautiful setting of all ski towns, in a
box canyon that keeps the world at
bay. One of Telluride's most sociable
innovations is double-groomed runs
— groomed smooth down one side
and left mogully and challenging on
the other — so even skiers on mis-
matched levels of expertise can ski
together.
The Peaks in Telluride is a ski-in
grand hotel and spa. It is also a winner
of the AAA Four Diamond Award. You
could see locals like Oprah Winfrey
pedaling away on the stationary bicycle
and Darryl Hannah jogging by with
her headphones on. The massive four-
level spa has all the equipment you
would expect of a world-class facility
plus a connecting indoor-outdoor
swimming pool served by a water-slide
that plunges from the upper level lap
pool — just for fun!
The small (19 rooms and two pent-
house suites) but perfect Hotel
Columbia at the base of the gondola
has been favorably compared to Aspen's
chic Little Nell. Renowned ski country
(via Le Notre in Paris) chef Chad
Scothorn has chosen to call the
Columbia his home and has created his
own restaurant, The Cosmopolitan,
there. Their number is (800) 201-
9505.
For women who want to work on
their ski technique in a luxurious and
low-pressure environment, the Deer
Valley Resort Ski School offers several
winter escape programs designed
exclusively for women and hosted by
former U.S. Ski Team member Heidi
Voelker.
These clinics are specifically
designed for women and conducted by
female instructors. Women enjoy cama-
raderie and female bonding while going
at their own pace to attain peak perfor-
mance.
Deer Valley is also one of the most
easily accessible of ski areas — an hour
by interstate highway from Salt Lake
City's first-rate airport — and is the site
for the Olympics in 2002.
The mountain is noted for being
groomed as smooth as pressed face
powder, and Robert Redford lives in
the neighborhood. What's not to like?
