RLD PREMIERE

Let Shirley the Shiva Queen handle your Shiva.

A rollicking, outrageous comedy. You'll laugh

through your tears.

Despite her Tel-Aviv yuppie per-
sona, Livnat has been a hardline terri-
torial nationalist ever since joining
Menachem Begin's Herut, the forerun-
ner of Likud, as a student at Tel-Aviv
University.
Her father, Azriel, fought in the
Stern Gang, the most ruthless of the
Zionist independence movements, and
remains close to his old commander,
Yitzhak Shamir. Her mother,
Shulamit, was a popular folk singer on
the right-wing circuit. Her younger
brother, Noam, was an early settler in
the flagship Gush Emunim communi-
ty of Elon Moreh, and is now active as
a student and administrator in the
contentious Joseph's Tomb yeshiva
inside the Arab city of Nablus.
It was no accident that Livnat's first
breach with Netanyahu came over the
Israeli redeployment from 80 percent
of Hebron, and later over the pro-
posed evacuation of 9 percent of the
West Bank. Old-guard Herutnicks
were raised not only on Begin's vision
of an undivided Jewish homeland, but
on a doctrine of honor. Livnat
brought that too into the grubby poli-
tics of Israel's fifth decade.
Livnat was one of the first to smell
a rat behind Netanyahu's appointment
of the blatantly underqualified Ronni
Bar-On as attorney-general. More
recently, she was incensed by
Netanyahu's shameless deception of
his own Likud ministers and Knesset
members over the way the party
selects its parliamentary candidates.
Hepromised them there would be no
immediate change, then allowed his
aides to orchestrate a convention vote
to abolish the primaries they were
defending.
Last weekend, apparently uncon-
vinced by a two-hour, reportedly acri-
monious, meeting with the prime min-
ister, Livnat let it be known that she
was contemplating resignation. She
could no longer trust her party's leader.
Two co-conspirators, Ehud Olmert
and Ronni Milo, the Likud mayors
respectively of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv,
urged her to wait until the time was
right. They were not yet ready to strike.
The mutineers needed first to enlist
a critical mass of support among rank-
and-file Likud voters, who remain
reluctant to desert their elected leader,
then to mobilize some of the Likud's
coalition partners over a policy, rather
than a personality, issue. Meanwhile,
Livnat will remain an intriguing link
to the days of Begin, albeit combined
with the very modern outlook of
today. O
