Et Tu, Limor?

Does Limor Livnat,
likened to Golda Meir
and Margaret Thatcher,
hold the key to a new
Israeli government?

ERIC SILVER
Israel Correspondent

L

imor Livnat, the last of the
dissidents to remain in
Prime Minister Binyamin
Netanyahu's cabinet, was so
loyal in the early days of the Bibi
administration that television satire
shows mocked her as the Prime
Minister's plaything.
Sara Netanyahu reportedly refused
to put a call from Livnat through to
her husband because she feared the
competition. At 47, married with two
children, the advertising professional is
now in her second Knesset term.
In the successful 1996 campaign,
she headed Netanyahu's public rela-
tions team and is credited with coin-
ing the keynote smear "Peres will
divide Jerusalem."
Livnat is the quintessential Tel-Aviv
career woman, elegant, articulate,
sabra and combative. Like Golda
Meir, she has been called "the only
man in the Cabinet." She says she is a
feminist, but like Israel's first and only
woman prime minister, that is in the
sense that she beats the men at their
own game.
When an interviewer asked what she
had done for women's rights, she
answered that she had changed the
"please wait" message at the national
telephone exchange so that it addressed
both male and female callers (no light
task in gender-specific Hebrew, but
hardly storming the barricades).
Like Margaret Thatcher, with
whom she has also been compared,
she does not hesitate to use her femi-
ninity. She is fastidious with her
makeup. Her light brown hair is
always immaculately styled. She smiles
for the cameras with gleaming teeth
and a dimple to die for.
Unlike Britain's "Iron Lady," how-
ever, she does not talk down. In the
year and half since the Likud returned
to power, she has grown into the gov-
ernment's most effective domestic
media performer after Netanyahu, but
without alienating either her inter-
locutors or her audience. She is forth-
right and persistent, always poised but
never insulting.
