who has never smoked.
"At this time, we're waiting for an
appropriate donor. Hopefully within
the year we'll be able to see that to
fruition," he said.
In the meantime, Strome also has
become somewhat of a local hero for
creating and designing a popular tour-
ing exhibit for Cleveland's Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame.
"When the Hall of Fame opened, it
was my idea that we put together a dis-
play on voices, since we considered
voice to be the invisible instrument that
all rock and roll singers use," said
Strome.
The Clinic funded the display which
was built in California and shipped to
Cleveland. It was a joint effort between
the Cleveland Clinic and the Hall of
Fame.
"It traces people's voices through
how they age, and the different pitch-
es," said Strome. "We actually have one
of the members of an upscale vocal
group talking about what drugs did to
his voice. That way, the kids can under-
stand that what drugs do to your body,
they do to your voice."
The display, which received a rave
review from Rolling Stone, remains at
the HOF this year, and travels to the
Chicago Museum of Science in 1998.
Strome's interest in music runs in the
family. His younger brother Stephen is
president and CEO of the Troy-based
Handleman Company, the nation's pre-
miere distributor of recorded music.
Their father, David, is a former presi-
dent of Handleman. The senior
Stromes now live in Florida.
Dr. Strome, 56, was born in Lynn,
Mass., and moved to Detroit when his
father took the Handleman post. Dr.
Strome graduated from Durfee Junior
High School (the Stromes lived on
Elmhurst near Dexter) and Cass
Technical High School in Detroit,
before leaving for Ann Arbor and the
University of Michigan in 1957.
He received his M.D. and M.S.
degrees from the University of
Michigan, and served residencies at
Detroit's Harper Hospital and at U-M
Medical Center.
One of Dr. Strome's two sons, Scott,
32, recently completed his residency at
the U-M Hospital after attending
Dartmouth and Harvard Medical
School. Like his father, he is an ear,
nose and throat specialist, and is cur-
rently filling a microvascular fellowship
in Philadelphia. Eventually planning a
career in academic medicine, he and his
wife Kimberly are the parents of
Arianna, 3, and Sophie, 18 months.
