The follow-through came back
home at the University of Wisconsin,
where she explored various disciplines
to test her talent and earned her bach-
elor's degree.
"Photography was more con-
nected to the things I wanted to do as
a graduate student in art school,"
Cohen explained. "I didn't want to
make sculpture anymore. I wanted to
do something more conceptual, more
social and political, and it seemed
photography was better suited to that
pursuit.
"I studied in the late '60s and
early '70s, when all kinds of things,
from pop art to minimalism, were

happening. I was looking at
domestic spaces in printmaking,
and at some time, it struck me
that it would be more interest-
ing and more honest to make
statements with photos."
Since the 1980s, she has been
invited to be part of museum
and gallery exhibitions in the
United States and Europe and is
represented by dealers in New
York, Paris and Brussels.
"I'm working on a book that
will show the public spaces I've
photographed," said Cohen,
whose domestic images are found in
the book Occupied Territory.
"I'm hoping to demonstrate that
territory is occupied in,all kinds _of
ways — intellectually, ideologically
and aesthetically." ❑
