When Zaydeh

by Else Okon Rael, with illustrations
by Marjorie Priceman (Simon &

This is a delightful book, the story of
a little girl and her grandfather, of
love and of Torah.
Zeesie is 8, and the one thing she
knows about her grandfather is that
he is cranky. "Sit still and listen," he
says at Pesach, and on Sukkot he
tells children to stay out of the sukkah
because they "bring in dirt and make
noise." Then Zeesie comes to stay
with her grandparents, and she goes
to synagogue on Simhat Torah with
her Zaydeh Avrum, and she asks a
question: "What is Torah?"
Her grandfather% response is wise
and tender — "[It is] a kiss from God

love" — as is the end of this book,--
where Zaydeh Avrum tells Zeesie's
father what a remarkable child he
has. "She is the only grandchild who
has ever asked me about Torah.
About its meaning, its essence. The
only one. Do you know how rare it
is, how remarkable, to have a child
who wishes to know more? A child
who asks? You have here a wonder."

This is the cat's pajamas.

These two books offer little new in
terms of story telling; the first is the
adventure of Jonah, the second tells
of two brothers who, unbeknownst to
one another, sneak to each other's
homes to leave wheat. The illustra-
tions are quite pleasant in both. If yo;-
need a gift that won't offend anyone,
here are two opportunities. But if
you're looking for something new
and exciting, you're likely to find
these bland. 'WV*
