Telling Lies in America goes back
not to the "fabled '50s" but to the
almost equally fabled early '60s.
President Kennedy is in office, his
"time for greatness" posters still beam
upon the tired streets of Cleveland,
and a radio DJ named Billy Magic is
pushing rock and doo-wop as if it
were God's mediCine.
Billy had to leave Baltimore because
a concert with Little Richard was "too
black." He's sort of a soul hipster and
sort of a scumball. Played by Kevin
Bacon with a shark grin and a line of
radio lingo that seems bolted to his
larynx, Billy is ripely ready for the
"payola" scandal that would famously
wreck Alan Freed and some other cru-
saders for early rock music.
But Billy has a fig leaf, a little scam.
In each city, as he bounces from one
station job to another, he hires a wor-

shipful teen boy to gofer for him and
receive the payola loot from record
promoters. The chump is too naive to
know much, too young to be prose-
cuted and usually too awed to turn
against Billy, so the federals are frus-
trated.
In Cleveland, the selected patsy is
the adoring but not dumb Karchy
Jonas (Brad Renfro). He came from
Hungary with his dad (Maximilian
Schell), who dreams of U.S. citizen-
ship. Karchy dreams of the new
republic of rock, of cool threads and
cars and "babes" on tap, though he is c=--
mired in a Catholic boys' school led
by the usual hard-butt priest (Paul
Dooley) and is smitten with a nice,
level and not quite trusting girl,
Diney.
While Renfro is fairly muffled by
the adolescent cliches packed into him
