t is noon at the Center for Yoga,
Relaxation and Health in
Southfield and seven people on
soft purple rubber mats are lis-
tening attentively to instructor Johnny
Kest as he guides them through a class
meant to strengthen backs.
In unison, the participants balance
on their upper backs with their feet in
the air as they curl their bodies so their
knees are literally touching their ears.
Taking deep breaths, they continue to
hold the pose for 20 long seconds,
unfurling to twist into another position.
They continue for an hour, yoga
pose after yoga pose, loosening and
strengthening a part of the body that
for some can mean crippling pain.
These seven participants are not an
isolated group of hippie throwbacks
from the 1960s. Instead, they are a
part of growing trend of Americans
partaking in yoga, a movement which
includes doctors, lawyers, teachers and
other professionals who set aside hours
in the week to practice this age-old
Indian form of exercise and relaxation.
And it is a movement that is mak-
ing its presence known in nearly every
arena of everyday life. According to
the Yoga Journal, more than 6 million
Americans currently practice yoga and

17 million more would like to try it.
"People are very surprised, even
today, that there are no orange robes,
no incense. They are surprised that
there is a regular mom leading the
class in sweats," said Veronica Zador, a
certified yoga instructor who teaches
in several places, including the Jewish
Community Center and the Sports
Club in West Bloomfield. "This is
very accessible and it is not scary."
Teachers in the Southfield Public
Schools can opt to take a class to
relieve workday stress, as can profes-
sionals at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit
Students at Covington Elementary
School in Birmingham practice yoga
poses as a part of after-school enrich-
ment at the same time that Jewish
Community Center members are
stretching and breathing in a yoga1 (
class in West Bloomfield.
The spurt has been so great for
Kest that he plans to move from his
current location on Southfield Road
between 12 and 13 Mile roads to the
corner of Northwestern Highway and
12 Mile Road. The move means an
increase in floor space from 800
square feet to 2,000 square feet.
"We started in my wife's parents'
house with a small group and the
practice grew to the point where we
had to move here," he said. He has
expanded class offerings and added
weekend yoga retreat packages.
"It is amazing," he said of the move
to the larger facility "but we need
more space to accommodate our
growing number of students."
In fact, yoga has become so much a
