"We call them martyr operations,"
he reproached. "God has chosen the
martyrs to save their homeland and
',their people. By their acts they get clos-
er to God."
As for the ceasefire, Yassin explained,
"there could be a temporary truce, if
they remove all that remains of the
occupation, including the settlements.
0 They must release all Palestinian prison-
ers, open a safe passage between Gaza
and the West Bank, and recognize a
Palestinian state with its capital in
() Jerusalem. If we get our rights, the war
will end. If we don't, the war will go
,,
on.
David Bar-Ilan, Israel Prime Minister
Binyamin Netanyahu's spokesman,
refused to take the idea sericlusly. "The
conditions," he said, "are conditions
which no government of Israel can
accept. The proposals mean total sur-
render to Palestinian demands and the
endangerment of Israel."
Yassin must know this too. More
dovish Israelis might concede most of
his terms, but for a permanent solution,
not for a truce. Unlike Arafat, however,
the sheikh is not reconciled to the exis-
tence of a Jewish state in any of
Palestine.
"We reject the Oslo agreement," he
insisted. "If you own a house and some
C aggressor comes and takes it by force,
would you recognize that the house
belongs to him? Who has the right to
this land, people who came from
Bulgaria, Russia, Germany, or the
Palestinian people? We have a right to
fight until we get our rights back." So
far, though, the sheikh is not challeng-
ing Arafat. "We admit," he said, "that
there is one Palestinian Authority. We
do not want to divide the Palestinian
people."
An Arafat poster peels next to a
Yassin silhouette on the wall outside,
but the dialogue remains more cau-
tious than cordial. In Gaza, Hamas is
lobbying for the release of 70 of its
members held in Palestinian jails and
the reopening of 16 welfare institu-
tions closed by Arafat. His Palestinian
Authority says every case is being
reviewed.
Official propaganda projects Arafat
as the elected leader of his people and
the PLO as their "sole legitimate repre-
sentative." With Israel easing the closure
imposed after the suicide bombings (at
least 40,000 day laborers now report to
jobs in Israel), there is little stomach for
0 rebellion. But Hamas is keeping its
powder dry — and in Sheikh Yassin, no
visitor can doubt, it now has a charis-
matic alternative to offer. O
