New Pact Needed
With Israel

Jerusalem (JPFS) -- While it is too
,--- late to amend the Paris economic
agreement, a new blueprint for eco-
nomic partnership must be drawn up
between Israel and the Palestinian
Authority as part of the final status
s,i-7) agreement, PA Planning and
International Cooperation Minister
Nabil Shaath said.
Speaking after a preparatory meet-
ing with senior Israel Treasury officials
for ministerial level talks, Shaath said
the 1994 Paris agreement, which
established the framework for eco-
nomic cooperation, particularly
regarding the passage of goods, should
– have been abolished three years ago.
The Palestinians have repeatedly
expressed their dissatisfaction with the
agreement, which they say gives Israel
the upper hand in customs transfers
and negotiations.
The two sides are discussing a series
of agreements which are expected to
ease the tension between the two
camps, at least on the economic front.
