1" Israelis, even if most of the houses
_1 were being built by Rumanians, the
apartments cleaned by Africans and
the invalids looked after by Filipinos.
But this year the growth rate is down
to 2 percent and jobs are disappear-
ing faster than they are being creat-
ed.
There are various explanations for
this development, with critics of the
present government claiming that its
failure to advance the peace process
has led to a drop in foreign trade and
investment, and hence to an eco-
nomic slowdown. Whether this is the
explanation, the economy is clearly
in trouble and jobs are at a premium.
This has caused some people here
to advocate the deportation of tens
of thousands of foreign workers. But
even if this is done, there is no way
2
of knowing whether unemployed
Israelis will agree to pick fruit, plas-
ter walls, clean houses and care for
elderly invalids.
