TERRIFIC TILES

Former Detroiter Ann Sacks made
a personal appearance at the recent
grand opening of her showroom Ann
Sacks Tile & Stone in the Michigan
Design Center in Troy. Ms. Sacks
founded the Portland, Ore., company
on the concept that elegant tile can
create an enduring space. Ms. Sacks
grew up in the Sherwood Forest
neighborhood of Detroit and graduat-
ed from the University of Michigan.

She became interested in tile at age 14
after visiting Mexico. In 1981 she
started her business at home, and
today there are eight showrooms and
more than 25 dealers nationwide.
When Ms. Sacks recently visited
Israel, she visited archaeological sites
in Jerusalem. Coincidentally, some
of her mosaic designs are similar to
antiquities. Ann Sacks Tile & Stone
imports an antique biblical lime-
stone from Israel and other exotic
materials from around the world.
On a personal note, Ms. Sacks is
committed to Israel. As a fellow of
the Wexner Foundation, she is
involved with the Jewish communi-
ty in Portland.

WORLD OF OZ

Doug Victor of West Bloomfield is
still talking about what a great time he
and his family had at Elliott Kessler's
bar mitzvah in Charlotte, N.C. An
entire West Bloomfield contingency of
friends and family attended the event
honoring the son of Phyllis and Allen
Kessler. He is the grandson of Leah
and Bernard Kessler, Lili Lewkowicz
and the late Leon Lewkowicz. Even
the DJ (Joe Cornell) came from
Detroit to celebrate the festivities.
Some of the Detroit out-of-towners
included Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Lewkowicz, Maurice Lewkowicz, Mr.
and Mrs. Paul Sweet, Dr. and Mrs.
Abe Gershonowicz, Mr. and Mrs.
