'Allan Jones' chauffeur quit him
here in Detroit and Mr. Jones asked
me if I would be his chauffeur to trav-
el around the country with him. I
checked with my mother, Sarah, and
she said no, so that was the closest I
ever got to being in show business.
Who knows what might have hap-
pened being with all the stars I would
have met?
"The Book Cadillac bell captain
had several favorite bellboys to whom
he gave the best calls. They invariably
kicked back part of the tips. If a guest
called down to the bell captain and
said, Please send up a bellhop,' the
captain would ask, 'What would you
like, sir?'
"If the guest said, 'I have to catch a
train,' you knew that was a 15-cent or
25-cent tip. But if the guest said, 'I
want him to do something for me,'
then you knew it was going to be a
good tip. They might ask us to go to
J.L. Hudson's or Kern's department
store to buy something. That generally
was a $2 tip.

"Or the guest might want you to
place a bet with a bookie, or get him
some whiskey after hours. He might
even want us to locate a lady of the
night for him. These were big $5 and
$10 tip items.
"The captain gave the calls to his
favorite bellboys, and then split the
tips with them. Somehow I didn't get
along with the bell captain. I couldn't
fall in with his cliques so I quit and
went three or four blocks down on
Washington Boulevard to the Statler
Hotel.
"I applied for a bellboy job and
got it. My escapades and experiences
would fill a whole column. Between
the Statler and the Book-Cadillac was
the Wonder Bar, and the sidewalk in
front of Stouffer's had steam pipes
running beneath it to melt the snow
and prevent it from turning into ice.
"Brennan Fitzgerald & Sinks was
where I used to go many times for
lunch. Also to Mr. Jaffee's restaurant, I
think it was called the Park Avenue
Cafe. He gave me a $5 tip every week
