MONEY MARKET

Reggie McKenzie has
been a giant, on the
)football field and off it.

LONNY GOLDSMITH
Sta Writer

R

eggie McKenzie's college
and pro football career as
an offensive lineman was a
remarkable one: All-
\- American at the University of
'-' Michigan and All-Pro with the Buffalo
Bills.
Even more remarkable is
McKenzie's commitment to his home-
town of Highland Park. His acts of
community service have gained him
yet another honor — the Alvin Foon
Memorial Service Award, to be given
at the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame dinner on Nov. 3.
"I'm honored to have been nomi-
nated and to have won the award,"
McKenzie said from his Seattle home.
'Alvin Foon was a giving person, and I
think we're on the same wavelength in
community pride and in developing
youth."
Foon was one of the founders of
the Hall of Fame when it began in
\-' 1985. The award is presented to "an
7--
individual for outstanding contribu-
tions to athletics and community well-
being in the state of Michigan."
Past winners of the award include
>
Detroit Tigers' broadcaster Ernie
Harwell, Detroit Red Wings and
Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, former U-M
football coach Bo Schembechler, for-
mer Tigers' manager Sparky Anderson
and last year's winners, Colleen and
Gordie Howe.
McKenzie won the award this year
for the Reggie McKenzie Foundation
in Highland Park.
"The foundation has been in opera-
tion for 14 years," McKenzie said. "Its
main thrust is education and putting
back into the community from which
\__.. you're a part of."
While most of the classes and pro-
7
gramming are geared toward kids from
age 8-18, some work is done for par-
ents also.
"We have conflict resolution classes
for parents and their children,"
i
McKenzie said. "There is also parent-
ing classes for children that had chil-
dren."
McKenzie has been working for the
city of Highland Park since 1970,
while he was still a student at U-M.
He was director of youth fitness in the

Highland Park Recreation
Department, supervised at the
Highland Park Model Cities
Community Center and taught
weightlifting classes. In 1972-73, he
worked for the Highland Park Board
of Education.
June of 1998 will be the 25th
anniversary of McKenzie's annual
three-day football clinic, held at the
field named after him (formerly
Hackett Field).
As a 6-foot-5, 255-pound football
player, he was the Bills' Rookie of the
Year and Most Outstanding Offensive
Lineman in 1972, and was also named
to the National Football League's All-
Rookie team. McKenzie ended his
playing career with the Seattle
Seahawks in 1986 after three years in
the Northwest.
