nce upon a time, interactive
technology in Hebrew
school meant figuring out
ways to throw notes across
the classroom without the teacher
noticing.
But with Jewish institutions slowly
merging onto the information super-
highway, plans are in the works to uti-
lize the Internet and other computer
resources in Jewish education.
The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit recently teamed
up with the University of Michigan's
Department of Academic Outreach to
explore ways technology "could be
harnessed for Jewish continuity," says

Harlene Appelman, Federation's dire -
tor of community outreach and edu-s
cation.
The result: a new initiative called
Michigan Jewish Online Education,
which aims not only to make educa-
tion more exciting for children, but lial
draw their parents and unaffiliated --
Jews into the community.
"The idea is to use the Internet to
teach and to build community," said
Appelman. "The technology is not an
end in itself ... It's about uniting Jews."
The first step, says Appelman, is to
find out what's already out there.
Federation has commissioned a com-
munity-wide survey to determine GO
what computer resources and skills
currently exist in Jewish schools, syna-
gogues and homes.
