JAGUAR OF TROY

Wishes all of our customers and friends a
mostflappy ancljlealth ey New sear!

Next on the agenda is providing
)
' training for Jewish educators. Under
the auspices of the Agency for Jewish
—7ducation's Nirim program, teachers
will be offered free Internet training at
U-M in November.
And by next Rosh Hashanah,
Federation hopes to have a communi-
\ ty wide Internet b'nai mitzvah curricu-
Aum up and running. The curriculum
would revolve around a community
Website where volunteers could be
l inked to mitzvah projects, parents
chat with each other about
% —
planning the bar mitzvah and a stu-
dent might be able to learn the trope
(cantillation) for his or her Torah por-
\ tion.
Other potential features: posting

b'nai mitzvah announcements and
photos on-line as well as offering
information about bar mitzvah issues
irising in interfaith homes.
"[The Internet] is a non-threaten-
ing way to get information and have
questions answered," said Appelman.
But will Federation help schools
`-- and congregations invest in the new
equipment necessary to take advantage
/
of the curriculum? Currently, comput-
er resources appear to vary widely
from synagogue to synagogue, with
\--some Hebrew schools like Shaarey
Zedek's purchasing new technology
and others, like the Jewish Parents'
Institute, relying on decades-old com-
• puters.
r- "We're not sure yet what we will
/ provide and not provide or any of the
details about funding," said
Appelman. "We're waiting to see what
the results of the survey are."
\--i Funded with an initial $150,000 in
grants from the Mandell Berman and
Avern Cohn Continuity Fund and the
United Jewish Foundation, the project
—is very much in the beginning stages
• • c,
with its "budget still evolving," said
Appelman. ❑
