moking, drinking coffee and
tea, aging and some drugs can
stain your teeth, but certain
bleaching procedures may
- \
brighten your grin. However, you
should discuss the procedure with your
dentist to determine if you're a good
candidate. To ensure success, a dentist
should:
• Take your complete medical histo-
ry in order to understand the cause of
tooth discoloration. Stains caused by
tetracycline, for example, may be diffi-
cult to bleach.
• Photograph your teeth before and
after the procedure to determine its
effectiveness.
• Examine teeth to determine their
sensitivity and translucency. Highly
translucent teeth don't bleach well and
may even appear more gray instead of
white.
• Conduct a thorough exam. Teeth
should be healthy, clean and sound
before bleaching.
Bleaching options include in-office
procedures, which take 20 to 30 min-
utes and one to three visits, and night-
time bleaching with a custom-fitted
mouth guard.
"For busy professionals and execu-
tives, in-office bleaching procedures
are often a better choice because
everything is done in the dental
office," says Ronald Goldstein,
D.D.S., a professor at the Medical
College of Georgia School of
Dentistry "However, some patients
prefer to have both the in-office proce
dure as well as the dentist-monitored
at-home bleaching to maximize the
whitening effect."
Custom mouth guards are designed
to reduce the side effects of bleaching, (.-=,
which include increased tooth sensitivi-
ty, by controlling the amount and loca-
tion of bleaching material. ❑
