JET strives to be included among
the cultural institutions in this metro
area, in particular as a source and
resource for cultural enrichment and
Jewish continuity for the Jewish com-
munity.
We are not only flattered but also
immensely grateful for the help you
have given us toward those goals.
With reluctance, I do need to mention
two points that need some correction.
We are recipients of many acts of
kindness from the Jewish Community
Center, but we are, nevertheless,
—\
renters, and we do pay a stipulated
amount to them for the space we
occupy and for the use of the theater.
Perhaps more important is the fact
that all of the Aaron DeRoy Theatre
renovations, the lobby renovation and
remodeling are entirely due to the
generosity of the Aaron DeRoy
Testamentary Foundation.
There are, of course, many individ-
uals, corporations and foundations to
whom JET must pay tribute for our
ability to have come this far and con-
tinue the work which we have begun
and to whom we are ever grateful. . The I
article spoke about the theater space
and lobby and, therefore, I felt it nec-
essary to clarify who, in fact, was the
benefactor.

Social Contract
In Context

I read with interest your Sept. 5 issue
("Inter-Circle"), devoted largely to the
issue of intermarriage. The issue
echoed the opinion of many that since
the rate of intermarriage is so high we
must be accepting (i.e., if everyone is
doing it, it is all right). The Jewish
News went so far as calling for a "new
social contract."
If we are interested in a "social con-
tract," perhaps we should examine the
words of Rousseau, the French
philosopher, who is largely responsible —`
for the modern-day concept of the
social contract.
Rousseau believed that a people are
made what they are by their customs,
that faith is stronger than reason, that
freedom is the fruit of a moral disci-
pline as slowly acquired as it is easily
lost.
We do have a social contract not to
destroy (vis-a-vis intermarriage) what
thousands of pogroms and persecu-
tions couldn't destroy. We have a social
