A Subscription To The Jewish News 810) 354-6620 Social Contract In Context I read with interest your Sept. 5 issue ("Inter-Circle"), devoted largely to the issue of intermarriage. The issue echoed the opinion of many that since the rate of intermarriage is so high we must be accepting (i.e., if everyone is doing it, it is all right). The Jewish News went so far as calling for a "new social contract." If we are interested in a "social con- tract," perhaps we should examine the words of Rousseau, the French philosopher, who is largely responsible —` for the modern-day concept of the social contract. Rousseau believed that a people are made what they are by their customs, that faith is stronger than reason, that freedom is the fruit of a moral disci- pline as slowly acquired as it is easily lost. We do have a social contract not to destroy (vis-a-vis intermarriage) what thousands of pogroms and persecu- tions couldn't destroy. We have a social
