Orthodox shuls. The city has three
Jewish day schools and seven pre-
schools.
Located in the JCC is the Jewish
Historical Society and the Memorial
Center for Holocaust Studies.
The Newcomer Fair is an annual
informational event sponsored by fed-
eration and the JCC to welcome Jews
who move to town.
In addition, there are many non-
Jewish sights in "Big D." On the
north side of downtown is the Dallas
Arts District. This is anchored by the
I.M. Pei-designed Symphony Center
and Dallas Museum of Art. The muse-
um has a Museum of the Americas
section with a large collection of art,
pre-Columbian through mid-20th
century.
There is also the Fair Park complex,
with the huge Cotton Bowl stadium.
This park has eight museums, includ-
ing an African-American Museum,
Museum of Natural History, Science
Place and aquarium.
The annual state fair is one of the
largest of its kind in the nation.

Purim costumes are very similar to
the outfits seen at home: Power
Rangers and Ninja Turtles, plus
Queen Esther, Mordechai and King
Ahasuerus. One little sabra I saw wore
a Moses costume complete with tall
staff and large tablets of the Ten
Commandments.
The Israeli children wear their cos-
tumes to school and then line up in a
boisterous, joyous parade through
neighborhood streets. The police close
off the streets to traffic and soldiers are
on hand for security as the show is
