New Center
Aids Children
At a ceremony in Jerusalem,
the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee
(JDC) brought together the
partners who have con-
tributed to a major milestone
in the battle against child
abuse.
The Succat Shalom
Jerusalem Schusterman
Center for Children and
Families, which includes a
temporary residence for chil-
dren in emergency cases,
treats the family as a unit.
The new, permanent loca-
tion is easily accessible by
public or private transport,
and all its services are on-site
— previously the outpatient
clinics were in a different part
of town from the residence.
On top are children's bed-
rooms, living rooms and a
modern, hard-wearing kitchen 1\
where the children can mess
around. The first floor resi-
dential unit contains outpa-
tient clinics, treatment and
observation rooms, the "Time
Out" room where agitated
children can shut the door
and let off steam, a school
room for those unable to
return yet to regular school,
and a large scale library that
can be used for professional
conferences.
Lynn and Charles
Schusterman, whose family
foundation contributed funds
for the building, are commu-
nity leaders in Tulsa,
Oklahoma where they helped i/
to establish the Parent Child
Center of Tulsa Inc. which
has similar aims as the
Jerusalem center. There will
be an interchange of informa-
tion and ideas between the
two centers.
JDC-Israel, the Israel arm
of the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee, has
pioneered wide-ranging pro-
grams for children-at-risk.
These include the four emer-
gency centers for severely
abused and neglected children
nationwide and a model com-
munity residence institution.
One of its main successes has
been the introduction of
