The monitor senses intra-
cranial pressure, local blood
flow, cellular oxygenation,
spontaneous electrical poten-
tial, temperature and potassi-
um concentration outside the
cells. These cannot all be
determined simultaneously
and in real time by other
existing monitoring devices
or by a computerized tomog-
raphy (CT) or magnetic reso-
nance instrument (MRI)
scan, but can be using the
brain monitor.
A small hole was drilled in
the frontal area of the skull
and the monitor's sensor was
inserted and fastened for
hours at a time. This one
patient showed spontaneous
CSD for a period of 24
hours, at a frequency of one
wave every half hour. Gravely
injured, the man later died.
The team hypothesized that
the CSD was initially stimu-
lated by one of the suction
procedures used to clear his
airways.
During the past two years
Professor Mayevsky and his
colleagues have used the
monitor to diagnose 20
patients suffering severe brain
trauma, during operations
and after them. The device is
in the final stages of being
patented.

School
For Knesset

/—i

As a condition for receiving
one of the 120 PCs recently
purchased by the Knesset's
computer department, all
MKs have been informed
they must take part in a
course to learn the basics
about Windows and the
Microsoft Word word pro-
cessing program.
About $2 million was
spent during the past year on
equipment for MKs, only a
handful of whom are present-
ly computer literate.
A knesset Internet site at
http//www.knesset.gov.il
opened, giving visual tours of
the building, information
about legislation, and the
opportunity to send e-mail to
individual MKs.
