50+ Singles

There are rules for attending
Singles Extension Group (SEG)
events: You must be over 50, Jewish
and single (divorced or widowed
counts). Oh yeah, and you must like
to have fun.
Started through Temple Israel, the
group has more than 275 members
and has been around for over 10 years.
Ages range from mid-50s to over 80,
and there have been marriages of
members. In fact, if you're one of the
lucky ones to get hitched, you can no

too.
To join, pay the nominal
fee, and you're in.
For information, contact
Al Sofferin, (248) 669-
1157, or Marylin Rozner, .

Boating With YAD

I'd never been on the YAD Boat
Cruise, but I'd heard a lot about it.
Everyone's done it. You're, like, not
too cool if you haven't at least thought
about it.
So this year, I attempted to add
cool to my list of attributes. I was
excited to go, strictly for professional
reasons, of course!
A warm and calm evening
drew more than 100 — lots
of familiar faces and some
new ones, too ... and there
was a nice mix of younger
and older, male and female.
The Diamond Belle river
boat took us up the Detroit
River, under the Belle Isle
bridge, to the bottom of
Lake St. Clair, then all the
way down the Windsor side
to the Ambassador Bridge
and back up by Hart Plaza
and the Ren Cen. Scenic

munchies, a cash bar, nice sunset.
Todd Wolfe said, "I thought this was
supposed to be the Northern Belle
CASINO!"
Josh Weiser was there "looking for
some fun!" YAD president Sari
Cicurel was there with husband
Mitch, who's "glad he's not single any-
more."
The captain let Jim Rosenberg and
a select few steer the boat — no acci-
dents were reported.

Last Single Hurrah

When I saw a table of attractive
women whooping it up at Chianti, I
just had to find out more. Seems it
was a bachelorette party for Dana
Saperstein, who married Stephen
Zatman at B'nai Moshe on Aug. 24.
There were "to-do" lists and a full
night of merriment ahead.
No word on the guys' evening —
I'm sure they drank iced tea and went
to a lecture at the DIA or something,
right??!! Mazel Tov to the newlyweds.

Searching At Services

longer be in the group.
A cold and rainy Sunday in August
didn't stop more than 100 SEGers
from attending their annual picnic at
Heritage Park in Farmington Hills.
They were celebrating the marriage of
two members — Joe Modiano and
Shirley Cohen.
There was cake and Karioke, and
members could sign up for one of the
more than 15 special interest groups.
Bill Greenberg says that "as a wid-
ower of the Jewish faith, it pays for me
to be a part of a group where there are
a lot of diverse interests, yet we all
have something in common."
It doesn't hurt that the ratio is
about three women for every man,

Top Left: Shirley Cohen
and Joe Modiano.

Above: More than 100 people enjoyed
the YAD cruise along the Detroit River.

Top Right: Todd Wolfe
and Sara Novetsky.

A very small group showed
up for the Singles Shabbat
service at Congregation Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses in
August. Ray Tanter, guest
speaker, discussed the Arab-
Israeli conflict and the peace
process.
Elliott Stahl attended, hop-
ing to meet someone, "liking
the fact that they combine a
religious service and a singles
event in one." They have these events
about once a month or so, but I didn't
feel all that welcome, and it was hard
to meet people. Maybe when the holi-
days come around attendance will
increase.
