CALLED
MOM FOR LUNCH ON TUESDAY, BUT
SHE WAS GOING TO A BOOK REVIEW
IN THE LIBRARY. I DROPPED BY ON
infomercials are playing to a weakness
of the public - our overemphasized
desire to lose weight.
"We have wonderful research (from
the Cooper Institute of Aerobic
Research in Dallas ) showing that an
overweight person can be even healthi-
er and more fit than a lean person in
some cases.
"So we don't like to see weight on
the scale as the index of health."
Nor should one piece of equipment
be preferred over another just because
it may burn a few more calories for
the time invested.
"No matter how many calories you
burn, it's not doing you any good if
you don't do it consistently," Cotton
said. "Find something you do regular-
ly.
"For me it's stair steppers instead of
stationary bikes. They're more moti-
vating for me. Others may like tread-
mills. They all have value.
But when it comes to spot reduc-
ing, targeting the thigh or abdomen,
for example, don't expect results from
one device or discipline.
Spare tires, inflated by years of
neglect and dietary indiscretion, don't
respond well to sit-ups or abdominal
toners.
But a combination of aerobic exer-
cise, nutrition and ab crunches may
produce results — over time.
"Exercise equipment historically has
been sold for its general fitness and
aerobic benefits, and many devices are
excellent for that purpose," said Jodie
Bernstein, director of the FTC's
Bureau of Consumer Protection.
"Recently, however, the commission
has investigated many exercise compa-
nies for pushing the purported weight-
loss benefits of their products.
"The FTC's message for consumers:
While exercise is a key to achieving
and maintaining weight loss, substan-
tial weight loss also requires a reduc-
tion in calories."
Abdominal toners for home use,
whose prices seem to be dropping
faster than any consumer's weight,
apparently have profited by the
promise of a trimmer waistline. Last
year the devices represented the
fastest-growing product in exercise
equipment.
But they still haven't caught up
with the traditional treadmill.
"Treadmills were so popular last
year that manufacturers were unable
to keep up with the demand," said
Gregg Hartley, executive director of
the Fitness Products Council.
THURSDAY, BUT SHE COULDN'T COME
BECAUSE SHE WAS BUSY IN THE ACTIVITIES
ROOM WORKING ON HER NEW EXERCISE
PLAN. I INVITED MYSELF TO LUNCH WITH
HER ON FRIDAY, AND THE FOOD WAS
TERRIFIC. I TOLD MOM TO CALL MY
BROTHER AND LET HIM KNOW HOW
SHE LIKES HER NEW HOME AT
THE HEATHERWOOD. I HOPE SHE CAN
FIND TIME TO CALL.
