Hollywood screenwriter and direc-
tor Popescu's memoir tells of his
journey from Romania, witnessing
political killings, Communism, revo-
lution and other horrors. Returning
"home" at the urging of his wife —
herself the child of Holocaust sur-
vivors — Popescu faces his greatest
revelation: the key to understanding
the past lies not within the political
horror, but within his own childhood
and youth.

Ida Fink's stories find their beauty
in subtlety; the New York Times has
placed her with Primo Levi, Paul
Celan and Elie Wiesel. The author of
The Journey has written a collection
of short fiction detailing the Nazi
destruction of Polish Jewry that is
often deceptively idyllic, in language
and sensibility, until she brings on
the power of reality.

Family Revisits Their
Eastern European Roots

A preservation of recipes, immi-
grant stories, childhood memories,
and musings, Miriam's Kitchen was
inspired by Ehrlich's mother-in-law.
A Holocaust survivor, "Miriam" pre-
served and handed on history, tradi-
tion, community connection, humor
and wry lessons of life — through
her kitchen. Reminiscent of Ehrlich's
own childhood, she began cooking
with Miriam, discovery the secrets of
crisp potato pancakes, savory Sabbath
puddings, instilling Judaism in her
own children and about world loss
and survival.
